Optum Rx Q3 results show YoY adjusted scripts down, revenue basically flat, and operating earnings up.

Revenue increased slightly to $39.9 billion from $39.7 billion, while operating earnings rose to $1.7 billion from $1.5 billion. Operating margin improved 40 basis points, to 4.3% from 3.9%; UnitedHealth attributed the earnings improvement to biosimilar adoption and operational improvements.

For the first time, more than half of Optum Rx’s covered lives were outside UnitedHealthcare, suggesting a diversifying customer base. Still, the company did not quantify how much the shift reflected new external business versus declines in UHC membership.
