Summary
I enjoyed attending athenahealth’s Thrive Summit earlier this week, where athenahealth (which I’ll refer to as athena in the remaining 4,000 words in this post) presented a series of product updates to its loyal customer base. 3,000+ customers, partners, and employees descended upon the Music City Center in Nashville for an impressive event on the current and future state of athenahealth’s AI-centric product suite. Below are my takeaways from the two days at the Thrive Summit.
An AI-centric narrative. The session featured an AI-centric narrative around the athenaOne platform, with a focus on rapid product deployment and the AI-driven opportunity ahead. The quote below highlights that dynamic well:
I've been doing this for a long time, and I've never been more excited about the opportunity to make the EHR a delightful companion for physicians. Sometimes physicians will say, hey, we picked athena because we kinda maybe hate it less than the other ones. We're going for full-on love here.
It’s emblematic of the overall tone of the session, which made it clear that athena is viewing AI as transformational to better support clinicians in delivering care:
athena is going for “full-on love”. athena views AI as the unlock that transforms the EHR experience, and is investing in making that experience delightful for clinicians. athena is rolling out new features faster than ever on top of its agentic AI offerings, even deploying new features during the conference.
An evolving UX and feature set. athena is clearly thinking expansively here about all the work it can carry on behalf of clinicians leveraging AI, but is also trying not to get ahead of the market. It posed a question on the mainstage that seems emblematic of this dynamic, pondering whether athena can simply do all of the RCM activities for practices in the future. Beyond RCM, it seems to be asking similar questions about front office and clinical workflows, leveraging forward-deployed engineers to sit with clinicians, listen, and respond to feedback in clinics in real time.
The little things still count. athena wrapped an impressive 90-minute main-stage session with one last small update: it's changing password requirements from a 15-character minimum to 8. This prompted a 20+ year athena customer sitting next to me to exclaim to herself, “Oh, thank you Jesus.” It’s a good reminder that even in these heady times of change, the little things still matter.
Driving the news: There were three big announcements by athena that came out of Thrive Summit:
Sage AI expands. athena's AI assistant moves into the clinical inbox, payment posting, VBC, and customer support, with agentic features coming. (Release)
Patients in Claude. Patients can opt in to connect their athena record to Claude via MCP. OpenAI and other vetted partners are next. (Release)
Humana prior auth. athenaPayer connects Humana to clinicians across athenaOne for electronic prior auth. (Release)
My overall takeaway: athena has an impressive product roadmap and experience, particularly when I think about its competitive set of EHRs. It told a great narrative about how AI will unlock the potential of the EHR to support clinicians via a more delightful, personalized experience. At the same time, all of the potential change from AI makes it both an exciting and uncertain time. In a world where you can build and deploy a seemingly infinite set of features in real time, what wins? How much can we really expect clinical practices to lead this shift?
Being the trusted partner to clinicians as they grow their practices while navigating these broader changes seems like a strong strategic position from which to address those questions. athena had 1,800 customer attendees representing 683 organizations show up at the Thrive Summit, which indicates the built-in advantage an EHR partner has in this environment. Clinicians are already turning to athena for help in navigating these waters. Building on that customer trust seems like the most durable strategic advantage that I can think of as we enter this new era.
